In our demonstration we install a simple brass hinge in a piece of hard maple image 1.
How to hang a door on hinges.
Use a utility knife to score the outline.
Use a vise to steady your work as you install hinges.
Install the other half of the hinge along the pencil markings on the door.
Repeat on the other two hinges.
Screw the other halves of the hinges to the doorjamb.
Hang the door slotting the hinges together and slipping in the pins.
If the old door was trimmed at the bottom and you were happy with the gap at the floor cut the new door to match.
Hold the hinge in place as a template and score around it using a utility knife image 2.
Unless i am hanging doors to match existing ones or the schedule says otherwise i mark a clear line with a sharp pencil on both the lining and the door 150mm down from the top this is the top of the top hinge and 230mm up from the bottom this is the bottom of the lowest hinge.
Hang your new door and test fit everything.
Drill pilot holes for the hinge hardware so that you don t accidentally split the door s edge.
Use a centering punch to make starting divots for the screws.
Connect the door to the doorframe by inserting the hinge pin source.
Position one half of a hinge with the inner knuckles in its mortise on the door.
Mount the hinges on the new door and hang the door.
You ll need to take the door back down and shave some.
Screw the hinge leaf to the door.
Replace the hinge and install it in the recess using the screws and screwdriver.
Next place your hinge on the door and trace around the hinge with a pencil.
Install the hinge knuckles lock set and door knobs.
If your door sticks make a mark on the edges where it s not closing flush.
If you don t need any further adjustments remove the door again then finish it to match the rest of the woodwork and rehang it.
Now it s on to the next item on your fix it list.
